Butterfly haircut

Short face-framing layers stacked over long flipped ends: reads like a 90s bob from the front, keeps your length in the back.

Look straight into the camera, face centered, hair pulled back from the face if you can. Even lighting works best.

The butterfly haircut is long hair pretending to be short: dramatic face-framing layers around the cheekbones sit over longer layers below, so from the front it reads like a 90s blowout bob while the length still falls past your shoulders. Clip the top layers up and the "wings" disappear — hence the butterfly.

It photographs beautifully, which is why your feed is full of it. What the photos do not show is that the effect depends on where those short layers land against your cheekbones and jaw. An inch too high and it turns helmet-ish; too low and you just have layers, no butterfly.

Instead of gambling a salon visit on it, upload a selfie above and tap the butterfly cut preset. The AI renders the layered shape on your own face and hair color from four angles. Put it side by side with the wolf cut — its messier cousin — and see which one your bone structure actually wants.

FAQ

Butterfly haircut vs wolf cut — which one?

The butterfly is polished volume (think blow-dry brush); the wolf cut is deliberate mess (think slept-on shag). Same layering idea, opposite attitude. Try both presets on your photo and the answer is usually obvious.

Does the butterfly haircut work on thin hair?

It is actually one of the best cuts for fine hair — the stacked layers fake density at the crown. Very thick hair needs the layers weighted, or the wings can puff outward.

How much length do I need for a butterfly haircut?

Below-the-shoulder length at minimum: the contrast between the short face-framing layers and the long back is the whole cut. On shoulder-length hair, ask for the Italian bob instead.

Is the butterfly haircut high maintenance?

The cut itself grows out gracefully, but the signature volume wants a round-brush blow-dry or heated brush. Air-dried, it relaxes into soft layers.
